Dear Families:
We are reaching out to inform you about a possible disruption to yellow bus service beginning in early November, and to share how we’re preparing to support you. We understand the importance of reliable transportation to your child’s education. If bus service is disrupted, our top priority is to ensure that every student can continue attending school without interruption. Though New York City Public Schools has not directly received any official notice of layoffs by bus companies, we understand this may be a possibility as early as November 3, 2025. We are monitoring the situation closely, and our goal is to minimize the substantial impact this would have on our students and families. Please review the information below and continue to visit our website (
Transportation Overview) for updates on the latest developments and resources available, as we want you to stay informed of the situation and the resources available to you.
All affected families will have the option of an OMNY Card for both the student and their caregiver at no cost. In addition, New York City Public Schools will provide pre-paid rideshare and offer reimbursement where needed to students who have transportation recommended on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Accommodation Plan (504), students in temporary housing or foster care who receive yellow bus service, and students with an approved transportation exception (
schools.nyc.gov/transportationexceptions).
We will provide additional information in the coming days. Your school’s transportation coordinator will work with you to help your family make the best possible arrangements for transportation to and from school in the event of a disruption. We know many of our students and families depend on yellow bus service and that even the possibility of an interruption in service causes concern, which is why transparency and support are essential to navigating this situation. New York City Public Schools is working diligently towards a resolution, and we hope that these plans for alternative transportation will be unnecessary. We are committed to supporting you in all ways possible.
Sincerely,
Melissa Aviles-Ramos Chancellor
